Tell me about you: Where are you from? What do you do?
My name is Cheyenne Boya, I’m a Congolese - French Photographer and Creative Director based in Paris.
When did you know that photography was something you were passionate about?
I’ve always been sensitive to art and known that I wanted to be creative. As a teenager, I got into photography using our family's digital camera. I documented my family, friends, travels, and surroundings, with a distinctive perspective. Beyond just memories, photography became a way to connect with myself through self-portraiture, building my confidence where I curated every element – the setup, style, hairstyle, and makeup based on my mood. It was a personal conversation and a free expression of my identity and creativity. Over time, I extended my lens to capture other people's essence and weaving stories. I think photography is a powerful way to create your own narratives and evoke emotions. It's been a constant source of inspiration and excitement, it’s therapeutic, it drives me.
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
I would say my journey, since the day I decided to take photography seriously – for believing in me, trusting the process and today I witness how my work resonates with many, reaching the right people. I got the opportunity to be featured in a magazine I like, and last year, I achieved my first cover on a print magazine with one of my favorite artists. Stepping out of my comfort zone allowed me to work on beautiful projects, I tried new things like directing videos. I'm not where I want to be yet but I embrace and celebrate each step. I’m still on the road, I believe that things I'm working for will come – I have faith and I stay focused.
What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?
I often remind myself to stop overthinking and just take action. Recently, I came across this reminder, "Don't be afraid to be seen trying" and it resonated deeply – do your thing because nobody really cares, and you have nothing to lose. It's about the joy of creating your art, not seeking validation. Follow what you feel, be kind to yourself, and stay true. Surround yourself with encouraging, sincere, and creative individuals. Be grateful! Lastly, I'd say, "Be the light, don't wait for it."
Life quote: If there was one quote that summed up your view on life what would it be?
“Fear is temporary, Regret is forever.” Go get what you want in life. Also don’t rush anything, it’ll happen in the right time.
