Stylized: Denisio Truitt of DOPEciety

Tell me about you: where are you from, how old are you?

31 Years Young, Originally from Maryland and currently residing in New Orleans.

What do you do?

Artist, Writer, and Lead Designer of DOPEciety’s apparel line

When did you know that Fashion was something you were passionate about?

Since childhood. I’d cut up my own clothes to make ballgowns for my dolls. My mom decided to redirect that creative energy by buying me fabric and teaching me how to sew.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

Depends on what you mean by big. If you mean the most satisfying its was teaming up with my partner Michael and  being able to translate the aesthetic of what was initially a simple t-shirt line into a clothing line geared towards artists and creatives. Its also being able to take that same aesthetic and translate it into other mediums, such as our monthly vibed out show electro-soul COUCHES which has been a pretty large success in New Orleans thus far.

What advice do you have for others aspiring to do what you do?

Its borrowed advice from a YouTube video I saw once of This American Life host Ira Glass. He talked about the point at which every creative has a vision to make something but what you are in actuality producing does not match the idea in your head because you don’t yet possess the skills to execute it or you need more practice or resources or whatever. He said that it is at that point that most people grow frustrated and give up. His advice was to push past that phase, to keep making your art even if its bad art.  If you are able to push through before you know it your mind and your product will match. As simple as it sounds that pretty much changed my life.  Removing the fear of what I was making and just making it.

Life quote: If there was one quote that summed up your view on life what would it be?

“You have to write yourself in.” Octavia Butler
